The nationalist composer Edvard Grieg was a strong advocate of Scandinavian music, and often gave concerts promoting Norwegian music. He was a quiet man, often avoiding the public, but when he died in 1907 the entire nation of Norway mourned his death, and he was given a state funeral. The Norwegian playwright Henrik Isben commissioned Grieg to compose incidental music for his play Peer Gynt, from which this piece is taken.
